Facility System Name: Town of Wadesboro, located in Anson County
Responsible Entity: Town of Wadesboro
Applicable Permit: Collection System Permit Number: WQCSD0051
Description of Collection System:
The Town of Wadesboro currently operates a Sanitary Sewer System of Collection piping only. Anson County treats the sewer for the entire county. The Town's system dates back to early 1900s. The original system was privately owned and was purchased by the Town about 1917 for approximately $11,000.00
The sewer system's piping range in size from 4 inch to 18 inch. Approximately 80% of the piping is terra cotta or clay pipe, while the remaining 20% consists of Cast Iron, Ductile Iron and P.V.C. piping.
The Town currently operates seven sewer lift stations. Sewer is gravity flowed to these stations and pumped to other gravity lines that intercept with two metering stations where the number of gallons of sewer is measured.
Due to the age and type of piping in the system, ground water and surface water can easily enter into the sewer lines, causing overflows and larger sewer bills. The Town has to pay the County for treatment of every gallon of water metered whether it is normal sewer or rain water and groud water.
As a result of the sewer department's efforts to reduce I & I, approximately 10 sites were identified and repaired. During 2004 also 12 manholes were identifeid and repaired.
In the future the Town will continue to imporve the system as funds come available. The Town hopes to have a "No Overflow" sewer system. Routine cleaning of the sewer system has become a vital role of the system maintenance.
Please do not let the sewer system become a F.O.G. problem. (That's Fats, Oil and Grease.) Never pour left over cooking oil, fat drippings and grease down the sink in your kitchen. These fats, oils and grease will solidify when they cool and stick to the walls of your plumbing, as well as the Town's sewer pipes, causing the pipes to become blocked. These blockages cause everyone problems eventually. Proper disposal is a must! Pour oils into containers and put in your trash. Never clean food particles from pots, pans and plates into your sink. Remove heavy food particles by wiping them clean with disposable towels and place in your trash can. Please do not use garbage disposals.
If you operate a commercial food establishment, proper operation of the grease trap is essential. The trap should be pumped out and cleaned every three months. Try to keep food particles and oils from entering the plumbing system.
Being aware of this problem and being proactive will help you and the Town to properly maintain sewer system components.
During the calendar year 2004 the Town's system had several spills or overflows of raw sewage. Most of these spills were caused by heavy rain. All of the heavy rain events caused spills near Burns Street into Lampley Branch. Occuring less often, we experience overflows from line blockages, caused from root intrusion, grease balls, or vandalism.
Three Incidental non-reportable spills, resulting in 300 gallons happened during 2004.
The Town conducts routine maintenance which includes cleaning and frequent inspections. Pump stations are checked daily.
The following lists all reportable spills that occurred during 2004:
September 2004
One Rain event resulting in approximately 21,480 gallons into the water of the state.
Due to the very high dilution of the sewer spills caused by the heavy rains, there was minimal damage to the stream impacted. The Town noted no fish kills associated with the spills. Any debris was cleaned up and areas disinfected as needed.
